Adoption and Human Rights

Adoption has been in the news recently. It was national adoption week in the UK last December and Madonna’s adoption problems were highlighted in the news last year. We are always told that the welfare of the child who is being adopted is of paramount importance. Will he/she be fed, clothed and educated to a reasonable standard and even be loved as if she was the adopters’ own child? If not what is the likelihood of finding their own flesh and blood in later life and being loved by them? Double rejections are very common.

The underlying questions such as how the adoptee may feel when they find out that they are not like most of their friends and “family”? With whom will they be able to discuss their adoption? – are there unbiased knowledgeable people out there who could lend an ear? Have you ever stopped for even five minutes to consider how you might feel if you discovered you parents and family were not your real parents? What do you know about nurture versus nature – probably about as much as the average adoptee knows which is precious little.
